CATEGORY: | Chamber |

Program Note:
Between, Around, Above was written for my good friend Tyler Martin. Both Tyler and I were interested in a style of flute writing that resembled a vocalist. I based this piece loosely off of vocal riffs heard in popular music and jazz. The title comes from a poem written by my dear friend Rūta Kuzmickas in response to the piece (she also painted the cover art shown in the SoundCloud link).
heart is anxious
carries oceans
spilling over
splits the earth
within us
sun is hungry
wants to burn up
all these years
we’ve left to melt
between us
wind is speaking
tongues of velvet
garnet curtains
spinning dust
around us
night was heavy
dared to linger
under eyelids
static shrouds
above us
